THE B2 FIRST EXAM IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR PARTS:
1. Reading and Use of English: You will have 75 minutes to complete seven activities that will test your reading comprehension and knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary:
· Multiple-choice cloze: Complete the gaps in a text by choosing from
four answer options (A, B, C or D) for each gap.
· Open cloze: Complete the gaps in a text by writing down the word that is missing.
· Word formation: Complete the eight gaps in a text by using a ‘root’ word (found at the margins of the page) to create a new word that fits in the sentence.
· Key word transformation: Paraphrase six given sentences by using a specific ‘key’ word, so that the new sentence has a similar meaning to the first one.
· Multiple choice: Read a text and answer 8 multiple-choice questions related to it. Each question has four answer options (A, B, C or D).
· Gapped text: Read a text with some numbered gaps (1 to 6), and decide which of the given sentences (A to F) fits in each gap.
· Multiple matching: Read a text divided into several short sections, and match each given statement to the section in which you can find that information.
2. Writing: You will have 80 minutes to complete two tasks that will test your ability to produce different pieces of writing.
· Essay: Write an essay based on the title and the two main ideas written on your paper. You must add a third idea, based on your own opinions on the topic.
· Situationally based writing task: Write a text from a choice of text types (article, email, letter, report, or review) based on the given prompt.
3. Listening: You will have 40 minutes to complete four activities that will test your ability to understand a range of spoken materials.
· Multiple choice 1: Listen to short parts of eight monologues or conversations and answer the multiple-choice question of each extract.
· Sentence completion: Complete sentences with missing information by listening to the recording of a monologue.
· Multiple matching: Listen to five short monologues and select five correct options from a list of eight possible answers.
· Multiple choice 2: Choose the correct answer for seven multiple-choice questions by listening to a conversation between two speakers.
SAMPLE EXAM:
4. Speaking: You will have 14 minutes to complete four oral tasks which will test your ability to communicate with other English speakers.
· Interview: Answers the questions your examiner asks you, which may require you to speak about your hobbies and interest, studies or career, relationships, among other topics.
· Picture comparison (also called the “Long Turn”): Talk without interrumption about the two photographs your examiner presents you. Describe and compare them, and answer the question written at the top of your paper. Then, when your partner finishes talking about their own photographs, answer the question your examiner asks you.
· Collaborative task: Read some material provided by your examiner and talk to your partner about the topic. You will be asked to make a decision together based on what you just read.
· Further discussion: Debate with your partner about the topics introduced on the previous activity (collaborative task), and answer the questions your examiner asks.
